I would like to mention a few of the things that Robyn Francis shared in her after-dinner talk this evening about the history of IPCs/permaculture. They present a recognition of the history of the permaculture movement and some notes about our intentions and how we organise. If you would like to know more about Robyn, her website is here.
In the first IPC, it was put forward that "if you see a need you should fill it. You don't need to ask permission. But you do need to take responsibility." "Anarchy is about responsibility."
Education
- IPC 1 - "A "college of graduates" - diploma holders and teachers was formed to regularly review and approve changes to PDC course curricula. College of graduates to meet at global congress to decide policy on procedures and education including areas of expertise defined for Diploma of Permaculture Design. The Permaculture Institute would accept these decisions."
Discussions on bachelors and degrees in permaculture started in 1989 (at IPC3)
Permaculture aid work
In 1986 the IPC 2 in Oregon highlighted the role of the global south (then called 3rd and 4th world people). The basis for training in permaculture in aid / development work was formed, and people started being trained.
Knowledge exchange
The first International Permaculture Journal was published by Permaculture International Ltd. In 1988, the first copy published on the computer was made. The last issue was July 2000.
Resources
The PDC handbook is intended as a guide. Can't teach chapter by chapter as important information would be missed.
Designers manual compiled from cuttings and clippings of examples, articles, and other materials collected by Bill Mollison and representing the first 10 years of permaculture. These were organised by theme as resources to draw on (not a curricula).
Some notable dates:
1984 IPC1 Australia
1986 IPC 2 Oregon. USA
1985 PDC handbook published.
1988 Designers manual launched
1989 IPC3 New Zealand
1991 'Global gardener' series on (Australian) TV. Huge surge of interest in and enquiries about permaculture.
1994 Global Ecovillage network formed from a subset of permaculture
1994-1995 The World Wide Web (www.) revolutionised how we communicate
2003, first Accredited Permaculture Training (APT) (Now becoming part of the Australian national training scheme)
