Hello everyone! Thanks for joining us here. The International Permaculture Convergence has begun! We presented the Next Big Step project to everyone, to a huge amount of enthusiasm and lots of people standing up and taking a big step forward to show their excitement to be involved and be part of this amazing evolution. The core team who have been working so hard for over a year finally met face-to-face! We have been meeting online using different kinds of technology and in different timezones, so it is an incredible experience to finally meet each other. I'm so excited about what we are all going to achieve together over the next few days and welcome you to be a part of this. Every evening (in the UK = GMT/UTC +1 hour), I will post updates of all that has been discussed during the day. If you want to add your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and illustrations, that would be wonderful. I will harvest these the next day and present them to the workshop in the afternoon so that those of you who aren't able to be present in the UK can still join in these important discussions. Please do reply to any thread topic that interests you and join in. Naomi

I want to welcome each and every one of you. I attended the conference where I hope I made a useful contribution and much appreciated all those others who did so. Many people asked us about what we were doing here in Scotland and I didn't get all their names and e-mails. You can contact me on graham@grahambell.org or visit the website www.grahambell.org. I am disappointed not to be able to be there till the end of the convergence but after five weeks on the road the ducks are missing me! As are all the other life forms in my extended family. Sandy James (sound system master and trustee elect (my lovely son) will speak to you at Chillwell Park. Join the ScotLAND tour!

Hi everyone, great that you are able to be here online and joining in the Next Big Step discussions. I hope that it is useful and helps us all to connect together.
A few thoughts from the opening session at the IPC:
How can permaculture be more effective?
Ideas from the group. - invest in kids. - Change the education system - Work with grassroots communities, especially in countries where people are in poverty. - Communities of native permaculture teachers in a have country with great resources In their own languages and their own cultures. - Network of demonstration sites where folks can come and learn - Ways to make livelihoods from doing permaculture - Scope to shift the knowledge sharing direction to learn from the global South - Work needs to happen locally or regionally.
Some key questions How do we get those networks? Make that impact? What are the steps we need to take? What are the obstacles along the way?
Overall question for the Next Big Step. - How can we progressively enhance the coherence of the permaculture movement in order to be more effective locally, regionally, and internationally?
Themes for each day Friday – Where are we now? Saturday – How can we increase our coherence and effectiveness? Sunday – developing our regional (continental) networks Monday – How will we make it happen? Tuesday – presenting and celebrating our work at the IPC General Assembly
What does coherence mean? STARHAWK – it is like unity, but it doesn’t mean that we all speak with the same voice. AUDIENCE – it’s about togetherness – we are all working together, even if we are doing different things, we are still thinking of each other, linking together. AUDIENCE - We’re really a network of nodes, like a mycelium, so not everyone has to agree with everything, but there is a strength of coherence between nodes ANDY Yes, it is about creating an ecosystem with many different nodes.
