A group quickly formed around education. We were asked to consider - the current situation
- the challenges
- opportunities
- What we would like to achieve at the IPC and where we would like support.

I think these are important. Looking at global trends of conventional farming i.e. corn, soy, cotton and wheat alternatives to unsustainable farming are needed and wanted. Without changing the mono crops implementation, such things as key-line plowing to help build soil from the bottom up, natural inputs sourced locally for healthy soil, cover cropping, specialized soil testing to get the full picture, bio-char soaked in solutions recommended by the specialized soil testing labs, with the focus on lowering input costs and increasing yield (that has increased in nutrient density observed by brix readings and plant analysis breakthrough from the Netherlands). Conventional farmers can start moving towards sustainable farming and stop the detrimental activity they seem to have no choice otherwise.

Thanks for those thoughts, Bob. Yes, wouldn't it be great to have education and training geared towards farming careers?
Here are some notes from Saturday at the IPC. The question today was:
*** Group 1 - education:
Goal - To achieve an evolved and evolving permaculture education system
- Global mapping of what exists already, qualifications that could be replicated and modelled like in Australia - Mapping language resources - what exists in non-english languages - Clarification needed that permaculture is a self evolving movement - no single point of control. - Proposal could target both european funding for vocational qualifications pan europe. UN?
- Objective is to replicate qualifications and produce core resources and publications, need intro and design manual, like east timor manual that is more graphical not word based. - Spanish, French, Mandarin and Hindi are most needed languages - Working with African and Latin American countries for languages
In South Africa there is a programme where, when the graduates start earning money, they are obliged to take on an intern and paying it forward - could this work?
For our next session - the networking time - the education group are going to spend the time harnessing the great minds and resources that are here - a call from the education group for people to come to their session. If we use this amazing gathering, we could have a post box or put up a sheet where anyone can give info about what there is already to start mapping process now.
Asher is going to be the information coordinator of the group
There was a permies coordinator website – could education be inspired by that work?
Mapping of research as well – can we make links with research group? ***
What languages would you like to see education materials in?
What permaculture education systems already exist in your region?

Hi everyone!
Asher Landes here. I had the privilege of facilitated the education group process throughout the IPCUK's 'Next Big Step'. We had a fantastic experience that fostered deep conversation, posed challenging questions of ourselves and the movement we love most, but more importantly we were able to create a Next Big Step!
IPEN (International Permaculture Education Network) has been formed out of need. A need to progress as a movement for change and a need to be more effective and cohesive educators. We are building this network as a support structure. To support our teachers with resources, our students with a higher standard of education and build a bridge of succession for both.
This project is at its formative stage. Almost all those who partook in the process have committed to seeing "IPEN" take its first steps forward. In the coming days I will upload our notes, mind maps and intentions so those who would like further in site may follow on. This is also a call to those who want to get involved, or know someone who may be able to help.
With that my email is asherlandes@gmail.com. Feel free to get in touch, if you are interested in joining our process or have any further questions I am available.
Thank you to the crew who met each day and fleshed out this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to IPC India 2017 and the journey IPEN will no doubt bring along with it!
Growing everyday, Asher

Just a quick thank you to Naomi for setting this up and Asher for facilitating our work at IPC2015. Looking forward to our work together, looking at a) what is taught, b) how it's taught effectively, both in terms of fundamentals of PC and the needs of the many audiences - especially across different languages / cultures, c) what good and effective support resources there are. Best wishes to all, Steve
